New Jersey Congressman Bill Pascrell has been honored by the Italian government as “commendatore,” or commander, in the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy. A commendatore is an order of knighthood in Italy. The honor is awarded by decree
of Italy's President to those who have served the country in literature, the arts, public
service, and social, philanthropic and humanitarian activities, and for civilian and military careers.
Pascrell represents New Jersey's 8th Congressional district. Formerly he served as mayor of Paterson, a gritty, working class city in Northern New Jersey that was a former industrial powerhouse and a key location in the ascendancy of the American labor movement. Pascrell was born and raised in the city's South Paterson neighborhood, the grandson of Italian immigrants
You may recall this blog wrote earlier about another Italian-American who earned this title, Boston's Mayor Thomas Menino.
